United States in 1891. A
large cabinet housing a 50-foot film loop which ran rapidly on
spools between an incandescent lamp and a lens while the viewer
peered through a peephole. Behind the peephole was a spinning wheel
with a narrow slit that acted as a shutter, permitting a momentary
view of each of the 46 frames passing in front of the shutter every
second. The result was a lifelike representation of persons and
objects in motion. Finally, in 1894 the kinetoscope was publicly
exhibited through the first kinetoscope parlor which opened on
Broadway, in New York City. The
kinetoscopes were coin operated and played early
Edison
motion
pictures. After depositing a nickel, the patron viewed a 20-second-
to one-minute-long movie. The successfully introduced kinetoscope
created an immediate sensation throughout US and
Europe,
an invention Edison first
regarded as an insignificant toy!
