Hundreds of books have been written on the art of writing. Here at last is a book by two professional editors to teach writers the techniques of the editing trade that turn promising manuscripts into published novels and short stories.
In this completely revised and updated second edition, Renni Browne and Dave King teach you, the writer, how to apply the editing techniques they have developed to your own work. Chapters on dialogue, exposition, point of view, interior monologue, and other techniques take you through the same processes an expert editor would go through to perfect your manuscript. Each point is illustrated with examples, many drawn from the hundreds of books Browne and King have edited.
There's not much of the old-style editing going on at publishing houses today. Renni Browne, veteran of William Morrow and other publishers, founded the Editorial Department in 1980 to teach fiction writers the techniques professional editors (many of whom have gone independent) use to prepare a manuscript for publication. In this book, she and senior editor Dave King share their accumulated expertise in a series of brilliantly compact lessons. One page from their simply and markedly improved version of a scene from The Great Gatsby alone would make a compelling advertisement for their techniques. Very highly recommended. --MTB
Clear, instantly useable, self-editing adviceReviewed by Mary Beth Bass, 2010-02-07
SELF-EDITING FOR FICTION WRITERS has moved to the top of my list of great books on writing. It's smart and easy to understand. I feel like my own book is already better because of it. Highly recommended!

This is one of those writing resources that should be on the desk of EVERY writer of fiction. I cannot recommend Self-Editing for Fiction Writers high enough.
It Hurts So Good...Reviewed by A. Rios, 2010-01-09
I never expected a book on editing would actually improve the sound
of my writing, but that's exactly what I got out of this helpful
book. These savvy editors show you how to improve not only the way
your writing reads from a stylistic point of view, but also the way
it sounds, sentence after sentence.
They explain everything in easy steps and show plenty of examples
and comparisons of "before and after" edits that really help you
get the idea behind the changes.
I really like this book and refer to it constantly to keep my
editing sharp and my writing crisp and clean. To me it's
indispensible.
I'll admit that while I was reading this book, I was also making
changes to my manuscript, page after page.
Instant humiliation. Instant gratification. It's a damn good read.

Great adviceReviewed by N. F., 2009-12-07
I've had this book for ages and never read it because at the beginning, it's kind of slow. But, I pulled it out a week ago and my manuscript looks better already. This book has solid advice for editing - how to do it and why you need to. It helps to distance yourself from your work so you can see it in a new light.
